AWARD CATEGORIES

Through an independent expert committee, the HOPE Awards recognize individuals or teams who have made significant contribution to oncology in any one of these areas of practice:

TEACHING AND EDUCATION: OF PHARMACY LEARNERS, PEERS OR PATIENTS

The HOPE Teaching & Education Award recognizes a pharmacist(s) who has demonstrated leadership and commitment to furthering and enhancing Teaching & Education in oncology for HCPs, pharmacy learners or patients. The successful recipient(s) has demonstrated advancements and innovations that:

  • Improved HCP knowledge about oncology therapeutics
  • Improved patient care and knowledge about treatment and disease management
  • Instilled confidence in HCPs, students, patients and caregivers about oncology therapeutics

The successful recipient(s) stands out for excellence, innovative spirit and commitment to furthering education. There must be measurable feedback to corroborate excellence in teaching. For example, a pre- and post-test to show the increase in knowledge based on the teaching initiative.

Examples of previous projects submitted to this category include:

  • Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre Oral Anticancer Medication Clinical Co-op Program
  • Development and Implementation of a Pharmacist-Led Clinic Focused on Patient Education and Toxicity Management for Patients with Neo/Adjuvant Breast Cancer

INTER-PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT PATIENT CARE

The HOPE Inter-professional Patient Care Award recognizes a pharmacist(s) who has demonstrated excellence in inter-professional programs and partnerships that ultimately resulted in improved patient care. The successful recipient(s) went above and beyond:

  • By developing inter-professional programs to improve the delivery of patient care
  • By demonstrating excellence in building robust partnerships to enhance the quality of care
  • By creating or supporting innovative inter-professional programs to improve patient safety

The successful recipient(s) stands out for excellence, collaborative approaches, and commitment to improved patient care and has measurable results to corroborate such. As an example, measurable impact could include details of the normal operating procedures in the past compared to procedures after the initiative, with data to show program success, or if too early, details to highlight changes and what it would mean long term.

Examples of previous projects submitted to this category include:

  • Implementation of Rapid Infusion Obinutuzumab in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
  • Pharmacist-Led Virtual Care Follow-up for High Risk Oral Anticancer Patients
  • Implementation of an Allergy Clinic for Patients with Prior Reactions to Anticancer Drugs: A Collaboration between Clinical Immunology and Pharmacy

SUSTAINABILITY AND/OR EFFICIENCY EFFORTS

The HOPE Sustainability & Efficiency Award recognizes a pharmacist(s) who has demonstrated a commitment to supporting the sustainability & efficiency of the healthcare system. The successful recipient(s) has demonstrated:

  • Innovative strategies and programs that improved the sustainability of a specific centre or the broader healthcare system
  • Leadership and commitment to support clinic efficiency and cost-savings programs
  • Leadership and advocacy to support budget sustainability through the utilization of cost saving medications

The successful recipient(s) stands out for leadership, forward thinking, and commitment to sustaining and bettering the healthcare system. There must be a measurable impact to the program or initiative. An example would be demonstrating cost savings.

Examples of previous projects submitted to this category include:

  • New Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Pharmacy Cleanroom Development Project and Regional NAPRA Standards Implementation.

HOPE+ : FOR DANS AND PHARMACY TECHNICIANS

The HOPE+ Award recognizes a DAN and/or a Pharmacy Technician who has demonstrated excellence in oncology practice. The HOPE+ Award acknowledges the unique responsibilities that DANs and Pharmacy Technicians face in the oncology field and their important role in oncology care.  Projects should fall under one of the following categories:

  • Teaching and education: of pharmacy learners, peers, or patients
  • Inter-professional programs to support patient care
  • Sustainability and/or efficiency efforts

The successful recipient(s) stand out for their leadership, innovation, and commitment to oncology patient care.

The inaugural winning project submission for this category was titled “New Hazardous sterile cleanroom pharmacy and New DAN position”.

First place award winners will receive a cash prize of $2,000 and may have an opportunity to present their achievement at the CAPhO conference. Travel to the conference is the responsibility of the applicant.

The HOPE Awards are presented once a year, in conjunction with the annual Canadian Association of Pharmacy in Oncology (CAPhO) conference. The 2025 CAPhO conference will occur in combination with the International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners (ISOPP) symposium (ISOPP CAPhO 2025).
